Job Summary

Description: Park University invites applications for a librarian position at the McAfee Memorial Library and Learning Commons on the Parkville, Missouri campus.  This is a full-time, year-round, tenure-track position (rank of assistant or associate professor) beginning August 2017. This position supervises one full-time library staff member and reports to the Director of Library Services and Learning Commons.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Collection Development and Maintenance – Selects single-title library materials in a variety of formats for acquisition, whether received through purchases or gift donations. Administers demand-driven acquisition (DDA) programs. Formulates collection policies and evaluates collection statistics and usage reports to determine acquisition and deaccession priorities. Oversees library staff activities related to the shelving, care, and preservation of non-archival library materials.
  2. Cataloging – Performs original cataloging of library materials and adds, removes, or updates catalog records using batchload processes as needed. Oversees library staff activities related to the cataloging and physical processing of library materials. Provides guidance on metadata creation for other library or archival data systems.
  3. Resource Sharing – Designs and administers library workflows to ensure efficient and user-centered service as it relates to interlibrary lending and borrowing and document delivery. Provides leadership to library staff in processing reserves and resource sharing requests and directly participates in these activities as needed. Monitors compliance with fair use and copyright guidelines. Maintains positive working relationships with resource sharing partners.
  4. Reference and Instruction – Shares in providing circulation, reference, and basic technology assistance to library users at the Norrington Center’s information desk, during office consultations, or by email, telephone, or online chat. Contributes resource recommendations for research guides and other digital and print tools, serves as a liaison to specific academic departments, and teaches occasional library instruction sessions as needed.
  5. Scholarship – Conduct academic research connected to library and information science in concert with departmental and University standards. Publish or present the results of research in appropriate peer-reviewed academic forums, such as conferences, journals, books, etc.
  6. Service – Perform service for the good of the University such as serving on University committees, work groups, and special projects. Contribute to continuous quality improvement of the library’s collections and services by engaging in assessment activities. Stays abreast of trends in collection development, cataloging, and resource sharing through active participation in local, regional, and national associations, conferences, and relevant listservs.

Requirements:

  • A Masters of Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited school required by May 2017.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library theory, as well as current practices and trends in librarianship.
  • Excellent organizational and oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and interact professionally with a diverse group of individuals in a changing environment.
  • Recent cataloging experience using an integrated library system.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel and Access for comparing separate lists and analyzing statistics.
  • Experience providing research and technology assistance to library users.
  • A demonstrated ability and desire to learn and implement appropriate technologies.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work during evenings or weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous collection development and interlibrary loan experience in an academic library.
  • Experience using Innovative’s Sierra integrated library system.
