Job Summary

Linda Hall Library, the nation’s largest independent research library devoted to the support of research and scholarship in the fields of science, engineering, and technology, is taking applications for Head of Stacks. Scholars, students, researchers, academic institutions, and businesses across the nation and around the world use the Library’s collections to explore and increase knowledge.

Reporting to the Preservation and Conservation Librarian, the Head of Stacks is responsible for the daily operation of Stacks services including the efficient and reliable retrieval of library materials for patrons and staff as well as the accurate arrangement and maintenance of the Library’s collections. The incumbent will supervise the work of full- and part-time pages.

Responsibilities:

Stacks Management

  • Monitors the monograph, serials, microform, and reference collections. Determines the allocation of stacks personnel to ensure efficient pulling, re-shelving and shelf-reading daily.
  • Refers problems with new acquisitions or existing materials to appropriate departmental contacts.
  • Facilitates resolution of all issues dealing with the physical nature of the stacks, such as relabeling books, routing items to preservation, updating shelf range markers, and maintaining. Serves as primary contact for reporting issues with compact shelving.
  • Identifies problem areas due to space, preservation, or organization and works with supervisor to establish projects to correct the issue.
  • Works collaboratively with a variety of staff to meet the Library's collections needs and goals.
  • Participates in the drafting of unit procedures, trainings, and workflows.

Management of Page Staff

  • Hires, trains, and evaluates a combination of full-time and part-time page staff.
  • Creates and maintains shift schedules and work assignments to meet the circulation needs of the library.
  • Develops and conducts regular training for pages regarding shelving and reporting techniques, and basic library services and policies. Selects and trains team leaders for specialized projects.
  • Creates shelving, grooming, reading, and shifting assignments for staff. Expedites sorting and re-shelving of new and returned material.
  • Monitors status and order of stack shelving; prioritizes call number ranges for shelf reading.

Data & Project Management

  • Compiles statistics on collection growth, processing, and service activities.
  • Works closely with supervisor and collections staff to plan and implement collection management projects. Provides expertise in logistics and leads teams of page staff for execution of these projects.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree.
  • Experience with library classification systems and integrated library catalogs.
  • Minimum of three years demonstrated experience in supervising employees.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Prior experience scheduling part-time staff to meet institutional needs
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment.
  • Flexibility and the capacity to embrace change in a dynamic and evolving organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; a facility for cross-departmental communications and cooperation.
  • Dependable, highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with at least one foreign language is desirable.

Work Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a normal library environment.
  • Lifting, handling, gripping, carrying, manipulating, and examining books and bound volumes ranging in weight from 3 to 40 pounds.
  • Repetitive overhead reaching, bending, and stooping to return or remove volumes from shelves.
  • Pushing and maneuvering book trucks.
  • Use of a step stool and library ladder.
  • Movement between floors and departments within the library.
  • Standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outside standard work hours as needed.
