Job Summary
Summary: Performs cataloging, classification and description of library resources in accordance with current international cataloging and metadata standards by using online and print databases and reference materials. Coordinates collaboration with the Biodiversity Heritage Digital Library.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with digital library consortial partners.
- Catalogs library resources accurately and efficiently in accordance with relevant library standards and information systems including, but not limited to, MARC, RDA, AACR2, and DCRM.
- Conducts translations for purposes of cataloging library materials in over 80 languages.
- Classifies using the Library of Congress or other mandated systems and constructs call numbers for materials added to the Library’s collection.
- Coordinates regular shelf reading, inventory and maintenance of collections.
- Provides expertise to patrons and staff regarding the retrieval of information via the library’s online catalog.
- Makes literature available through reference services and identifies sources and locates information.
- Utilizes integrated library systems and interfaces and related technologies.
- Performs Library database maintenance as needed.
- Trains and directs the work of volunteer staff.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
- Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed; informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines, methods to reduce hazards. Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
- Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation, within our division and throughout the Garden, with co-workers, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and employees.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisory duties. May lead the work of volunteers and co-workers to complete general projects.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Minimum one to three (1-3) years experience in library or media resources management or equivalent.
- Demonstrated working knowledge and thorough understanding of automated library systems and online databases.
- Working knowledge of patron needs and interests.
- Extensive knowledgebase of print, non-print and electronic resources available from a wide number of sources, including publishers, the Internet, and library and vendor-based systems.
- Ability to work well within the principles and practices of collection development.
- Proven ability to lead and direct the work of others to complete general projects, including volunteer supervision and project coordination.
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Scheduling flexibility is required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays.
- Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.

Education:
- Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited school of Librarianship required.
- An equivalent combination of education, skills and experience may be considered.
