Missouri S&T to Hire New Library Dean this Summer

Missouri S&T will welcome a new dean of the library this summer. Dr. Hsin-liang (Oliver) Chen will begin his position as dean of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library on July 1, 2019. He will also have a courtesy appointment in Missouri S&T’s business and information technology department.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Chen to Rolla, and we look forward to his leadership at the library,” says Missouri S&T Provost Robert Marley. “We are grateful to Susan Hakim for serving as interim library director while this important search was conducted.”

Chen currently serves as associate dean for assessment and librarian of the Joseph P. Healey Library at University of Massachusetts–Boston, where he advocated for adopting emerging library and higher education assessment trends, designed and coordinated assessment methods and strategies, engaged library stakeholders, and analyzed library-wide data. Chen also produced online courses such as “Digital Analytics and Business Strategies,” “Essentials of Web Development” and “IT Project Management.”

Chen earned his Ph.D. in library and information science at the University of Pittsburgh. He also earned a master’s degree in educational communication and technology from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in library science from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan.

Chen has worked in library and information science for multiple universities, including Long Island University, Indiana University, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Texas at Austin and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Susan Hakim currently leads the library as interim director, a position she has held since June 2018. She will return to S&T’s office of human resources.
