Job Summary

Brief Overview

The Director of the Library at Maryville University will be a team leader involved in the reinvention and transformation of the University Library, as our collaborative and active learning ecosystem continues to develop and expand. As plans for a major renovation of
the building unfold, the director will be integral in the planning of the University Innovation Center.

Guided by the University Strategic Plan and focused on student‐centered learning, the Director will be instrumental in the development and delivery of a cutting edge library of the future. The Director has administrative responsibility for all library resources, services, and operations. The Director works collaboratively with all areas on campus to ensure students, educational programs, and resources of the library are the central core of the University. The successful candidate serves as a key partner, representing the library within the University and the external world. They must be committed to fostering a culturally diverse, student‐centered atmosphere, infused with both critical thinking skills and innovation.

Specifically, the Library Director:

  • Serves as an active team member in the development of a novel and collaborative approach, as we create a new vision of what an academic library can and will be
  • Manages the library team by building effective internal relationships, while recognizing the ideas and strengths of those around them
  • Collaborates to create student initiatives which enhance learning, and are able to reach all genres of diverse student populations
  • Articulates, advocates, and measures the performance of the strategic vision for the future of the library which is transformational, avant‐garde, and reinforces the University Strategic Plan
  • Supports students and faculty through the continuing assessment of online resources and serves to provide the most current and cost effective digital and physical library
  • Leads in the facilitation of student critical thinking and information literacy throughout the curriculum

Operational Leadership Expectations

  • Provides leadership and administrative expertise for library services and resources
  • Coordinates the hiring, review, and development of library staff
  • Supervises as well as provides leadership and mentoring to direct reports
  • Prepares and justifies the annual library budget, relating all priorities to the University Strategic Plan
  • Leads continuous assessment of library resources, services, and operations
  • Contributes to academic accreditation, evaluative reviews, and new program initiatives
  • Oversees the efficient organization, preservation, and digitization of the University Archives

General Expectations

  • Represents and networks locally, regionally, and nationally to expand existing, creative, and mutually beneficial relationships within the spheres of corporations, the public, nonprofits, library consortia, etc.
  • Identifies new sources of revenue and funding via grants, partnerships, as well as innovative business partnerships and solutions
  • Fosters and creates new library policy which aligns with the mission of the University
  • Understands the involvement required to create a new, transformational, innovative library

Minimum Qualifications

  • Academic credentials to include an earned Master’s degree or doctoral degree, with relevant experience, from a recognized accredited institution.
  • Experience managing a group of diverse individuals, developing a cohesive, productive team
  • Familiarity with the Association of College & Research Libraries, library consortia, and accreditation
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven ability to engage and inspire others
  • Experience with innovative practices that have enabled students, faculty, and staff to become more ffective researchers and consumers of knowledge
  • Experience in collecting and utilizing data to inform strategic planning
  • Significant knowledge of the application of technologies in support of library services
  • Commitment to collegiality and collaborative decision making
  • Proven effectiveness and expertise in change management in a complex environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal doctoral degree in library studies, higher education, or similar 
  • Experience in higher education or corporate libraries
  • Demonstrated commitment to higher education and innovation
  • Experience renovating and expanding a library, or other large academic institution

Work Hours Regular office hours. Some weekend and evening hours required for university events.
