10 Month Professional Position; Working Sunday-Thursday from 3:00 pm to Midnight (work August – May and off June – July)

Kent Library’s Access Services provides student, faculty, staff and community guest user services. The unit ensures safe and secure spaces for users, staff and library collections. Access Services is responsible for opening, staffing, and closing the building, and for user and staff safety and security during regular and extended hours. Day-to-day Access Services operations include: providing courteous, friendly user services; assisting users in finding information; facilitating user access to library resources and lending/borrowing activities; managing user access to interlibrary loan materials; communicating with faculty about course reserves; implementing and modeling unit policies and procedures; training and supervising unit employees; and organizing and maintaining the Library’s circulating collections. Access Services staff may be required to work during poor weather conditions as Kent Library is considered an essential university service.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent, courteous, friendly user services
  • Facilitate user access to library services, resources, spaces and resource sharing
  • Provide late night in-person and virtual reference and research assistance at the Reference Desk
  • Ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, library guests and library spaces
  • Participate in evaluation of evening and weekend library staff and student employees
  • Share responsibility for scheduling, training and supervising Access Services and Reference student employees
  • Participate in borrowing and lending resource sharing activities
  • Oversee management of course reserves
  • Share responsibility for building and facilities coordination
  • Manage and maintain Kent Library’s children’s and young adult collections and the circulating and periodicals collections
  • Create and maintain digital learning materials; such as library guides
  • Share responsibility for Kent Library’s social media account(s)
  • Serve on library and university committees
  • Lead and participate in special projects as requested
  • Perform other duties as assigned  

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum two years of work experience in a library; public services experience a plus
  • Experience providing excellent user services
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure in challenging situations
  • Experience with employee training and/or supervision
  • Knowledge of, and working familiarity with, at least one library classification system
  • Basic understanding of resource sharing among libraries
  • Evidence that indicates strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy
  • Capacity to organize work effectively
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lead and/or participate in project planning, implementation and completion
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively in a work setting
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and ability to work well as a member of a group and individually
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
