Position: Youth Services Department Manager Classification: Librarian I Salary Track: L FSLA Status: Exempt The vision for the Springfield-Greene County Library is to be a thriving Library that is an integral part of the lives of the community. Essential Functions Responsibilities include the following:  Manage youth services at the branch, based on assessment and evaluation of the developmental needs and interests of youth in the community. .Observe, plan, implement, evaluate, and document Youth Services programs and displays.  Work with staff to plan, implement and evaluate youth programs based on the developmental stages and needs of the target audiences.  Oversee and manage daily operations and budget of the Youth Services department.  Collaborate with Reference Manager on supervision/direction/management of shared staff. Assist patrons with reader's advisory, information and location of library materials.  Represent the Youth Services department at supervisors’ meetings, District Children’s Committee meetings and District Teen meetings.  Develop and supervise youth participation, such as youth advisory groups, teen volunteers, and opportunities for employment.  Develop Library services based on sound models of youth participation and development, allowing for social interaction, growth, and learning.  Assist and instruct patrons in the operation of personal computers (PC’s) and other reference materials.  Assist with material selection and collection development.  Prepare departmental reports and correspondence as required.  Perform routine telephone reference and information work.  Perform computer data searches; must be proficient in using computers with Windows.  Collaborate with community organizations and individuals to develop youth services beyond library walls. Preparing and presenting off-site programs.  Effectively lead building tours and meetings.  Perform basic file keeping and clerical duties.  Perform other duties as assigned.  Timeliness: Since employees in this position work with other staff and provide assistance to the general public who patronize the Library, Youth Services Department Managers must be punctual and timely in arriving to work and completing tasks. A Youth Services Department Manager must also be capable of working a full-time (40 hour per week) schedule.  Ability to work with others and the general public: Youth Services Department Manager jobs are interdependent and mutually dependent regarding other job categories. Youth Services Department Managers also have a high degree of direct contact with Library patrons and staff. Therefore, it is essential that individuals who work in this position have the ability to work and interact in a cooperative, pleasant, and constructive manner with others and encourage and nurture positive relationships between youth, their families, the library, staff and administration Education/Experience  MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited university required. (Will consider if nearing completion.)  2-3 years public service experience preferred.  2-3 years library experience preferred.  2 years of supervisory experience preferred  Experience working with children and teens. Skills/Job Knowledge  Ability to interact pleasantly, constructively and cooperatively with library patrons and staff.  Excellent communications skills, oral and written.  Ability to effectively listen to and respond to patron inquiries.  Ability to perform basic library functions during times of high public usage.  Working knowledge of library ready reference tools, databases and youth literature.  Demonstrates artistic and creative ability in the development of youth programming and displays.  Computer and keyboard skills, to include Windows, word processing and spreadsheet construction.  Work with staff to plan, implement and evaluate youth programs based on the developmental stages and needs of the target audience.  Must have excellent public speaking skills, ability to plan, organize and execute programs. Contact  Regular, daily public contact with adults, teens and children.  Works closely with other department personnel.  Routine telephone contact with others departments and branches. Supervision  Supervised by Branch Manager. Physical Demands  Performs bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching from floor level to 6 feet in height.  Displays good coordination and mobility.  Routine lifting of library materials weighing up to 20 lbs. Working Environment  Primarily indoors with heating and cooling regulated in a general library environment.  Occasional special outdoor events. Miscellaneous Requirements  Must pass a security background check.
Required qualifications:
